Ahead of Gujarat assembly election, 25,000 detained in Ahmedabad and Surat | Gujarat Election News

AHMEDABAD/SURAT: There is still a fortnight to go for the first phase of voting for the assembly poll in Gujarat, but the police have already made more than 25,000 preventive arrests in Ahmedabad and Surat alone.
The cops seemed extra-cautious as they charged into action, arresting people under sections of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (Pasa) since the poll schedule was announced on November 3. The arrests were being made on the state election commission’s orders to instil a sense of safety among voters and organise free and fair polls in Gujarat.
Among the major cities in Gujarat, Surat reported the highest number with 12,965 preventive arrests; Ahmedabad followed with 12,315 detainees. “Most of those detained were those caught with knives or sticks. Then there are people who were earlier arrested in criminal cases, including those related to bootlegging,” a Surat cop said.
Surat police arrested 828 people booked in multiple cases recently under Pasa and externed 93 people for their involvement in bootlegging cases.
In Ahmedabad city, police detained 12,315 persons under preventive arrests. Police detained 38 people under Pasa in less than a fortnight. A police officer from Ahmedabad said, “All these detainees were allegedly involved in committing bodily offences, including murder, attempted murder and hurting someone, in the past or were involved in anti-social activities.”
According to Ahmedabad city police records, 156 people were detained on November 3. This rose to 2,217 on November 14. In the same period, 38 persons were booked under Pasa. Twenty-six of them were detained between November 8 and 14.
In Vadodara city, police have made over 1,600 preventive arrests, including seven under Pasa.
