  • Sanjay Arora is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1988 batch of Tamil Nadu cadre who was appointed as the Commissioner of Police, Delhi on 1 August 2022 after his inter-cadre deputation was approved by MHA. He is the second successive non-AGMUT cadre IPS officer to head the Delhi Police and the third since the Delhi Police Act was passed in 1978. Previously, he served as the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
  • After joining the IPS, he served in various capacities in the Tamil Nadu Police. He was the Superintendent of Police (SP), Special Task Force, where he hunted down the Veerappan gang for which he was awarded the CM’s Gallantry Medal for Bravery and Heroic Action.
  • In 1991, Arora played a pivotal role in forming the Special Security Group (SSG), which provided security to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu during the time when the Tamil militant organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was at its peak.
  • Furthermore, he has also served as a member of Central Police Organizations like CRPF, BSF & ITBP in various profiles.
  • Deputations under his belt include serving as a commandant in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) paramilitary force from 1997 to 2002.
  • He commanded a border-guarding ITBP battalion in Matli, Uttarakhand, from 1997 to 2000.

  • He has led the Chennai City Police as Additional Commissioner Crime & Headquarters and Additional Commissioner Traffic.
  • From 2002 to 2004, he served as Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City.
  • He also served as the Inspector General (Special Operations) BSF, IG Chhattisgarh Sector CRPF, and IG Operations CRPF.
  • Arora has also held the positions of Deputy Inspector General of Police, Villupuram range, and Deputy Director of Vigilance and Anti-corruption.
  • Later, he was appointed as ADGP (Operations) and ADGP (Administration) in Tamil Nadu Police.
  • After serving as ADG (HQ & ops) in CRPF and special DG (J&K) in CRPF, he was appointed as the ITBP director general on 31 August 2021.
  • While serving as DG ITBP, Sanjay Arora took additional charge of DG SSB from Kumar Rajesh Chandra, DG SSB at S.S.B. Force Headquarters, New Delhi, in December 2021.
  • He served as DG ITBP till 31 July 2022 after which Sujoy Lal Thaosen assumed the position.

  • On 1 August 2022, Arora assumed the position of Delhi Police Commissioner. He replaced the 1984-batch officer Rakesh Asthana, who retired after completing his one-year stint as Delhi Police Commissioner.

  • Although the Delhi Police functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and its officers belong to the AGMUT cadre, the inter-cadre deputation of Arora, a Tamil Nadu Cadre IPS officer, was approved by MHA.
  • Ajay Raj Sharma (from UP cadre) was the first non-AGMUT cadre IPS officer who was posted as Delhi police commissioner in 1999. The experiment was not repeated until 2021 when Rakesh Asthana of Gujarat cadre assumed the position.
